Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen is pleased to announce that Kate R. Cook, Chief Legal Counsel to former Governor Deval L. Patrick, has joined the firm as Of Counsel. She will focus her practice in the areas of business, employment, environmental and real estate litigation. With extensive experience in a wide range of legal issues, Kate counsels businesses, institutions and government entities on high profile, complex legal matters.

Kate’s practice draws upon her unique skill set as a legal advisor to political executives and as an experienced litigator with proven solution-oriented results. Most recently, she advised Governor Deval L. Patrick on all legal, regulatory and policy matters across the administration. In addition to serving as Chief Legal Counsel to the Governor, Kate also served as General Counsel to Massachusetts Senate Ways and Means Committee and Assistant Corporation Counsel to the City of Boston.

Regina Roman, Sugarman Rogers’ Managing Partner, noted “we are delighted to welcome Kate and know that she will be a strong addition to our litigation team. Her excellent judgment and experience as a senior legal advisor complements our firm’s longstanding reputation as trusted advisors and advocates.”

Kate was recently honored by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly as one of the “Top Women of Law” and by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce as one of “Ten Outstanding Young Leaders.” She has served in numerous leadership roles over the years, including Trustee and former President of the Women’s Bar Foundation, member of the Boston Bar Association’s Task Force to Expand Civil Legal Aid, and Board Member for the Women’s Bar Association of Massachusetts. In addition, Kate is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Lunch Place.

Kate received her B.A. from Brown University (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and her law degree from Harvard University Law School.
