Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, P.C., is pleased to announce that partner Kate R. Cook has been appointed to the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts (ACLUM) Board of Directors. As a member of the ACLUM’s board of directors, Cook will support the important work of the private, non-partisan organization to defend and preserve – in court, in the legislature, and in communities – the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Massachusetts Declaration of Rights as well as the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. Cook has been involved with ACLUM for several years, including serving as a cooperating attorney. At Sugarman Rogers, Cook is the leader of the firm’s Government Law practice group. She advises clients in all aspects of government and election law. She helps private entities, government bodies, and public officials navigate administrative law, campaign finance, crisis management, constitutional law, conflict of interest law, open meeting law, public records, lobbying, and legislative and regulatory policy. Before joining Sugarman Rogers, Cook served as chief legal counsel to Governor Deval Patrick. In addition to her work with ACLUM, Cook serves on the Boston Bar Association Executive Committee and the BBA Council. She is a former chair of the BBA Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Section and a past president of the Women’s Bar Foundation. Cook also serves on the board of directors of the Women’s Lunch Place, a day shelter for homeless women. She was recently selected for inclusion in the 2021 Best Lawyers in America in Civil Rights law. She received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Brown University, and her J.D. from Harvard Law School.
